Where are you based?
Fell Pony Adventures is based at Newby Bridge, at the foot of Lake Windermere, where we run day treks and riding hacks.
Our 3-day wild camping pack pony expeditions take place at Haweswater, within the RSPB nature reserve. Full directions are provided after booking.

What days do you run?
We run day treks and riding hacks throughout the year.
Our 1-night and 3-day wild camping pack pony treks run from May to September.
How do I book a Fell Pony Adventure?
Bookings are made through our website using the contact or booking buttons.
If you have questions before booking, you are welcome to contact us by email at tom@fellpony.co.uk. Availability varies by season.
Can I come on a trek on my own?
Yes, solo travellers are welcome.
3-day wild camping treks require a minimum group of 4 people (maximum 8). You may book as a solo traveller and we will try to match you with others, or you may form your own group.
1-night Windermere trek requires a minimum of 2 people.
Pack pony day treks have a minimum charge equivalent to 2 adults.
👨👩👧 Who Can Take Part
What ages can take part?
Riding hacks: minimum age 12 years
Pack pony treks: children aged 10 years and over can usually handle a pony for most of the day
All participants must be physically capable of the activity.
Can my child come unaccompanied?
Children aged 12 and over may ride unaccompanied, provided they are competent and able to ride at walk, trot, and canter.
All ride leaders are DBS (formerly CRB) checked.
Is there a weight limit for riders?
Yes. The maximum rider weight is 12.5 stone (80 kg).
Weight, height, and ability limits apply to protect the welfare of our Fell ponies.
🐎 Experiences & Ability Levels
Do I need previous riding experience?
Riding hacks: riders must be competent at walk, trot, and canter. We cannot take novice riders, as we do not have a schooling area.
Pack pony experiences: no previous experience with horses or ponies is required. Full instruction is given.
Which trek would be best for me?
Windermere 1-night Wildcamp: suitable for family groups
Swindale 3-day Wildcamp: suitable for family groups
Haweswater 3-day Wildcamp: more challenging, with longer days and steeper ascents. A good level of fitness is required.
Do you offer riding lessons?
No. We do not offer riding lessons, as we do not have a suitable schooling area.
Do you offer afternoon or sunset rides?
Yes. During the summer we offer afternoon and sunset rides on request, subject to availability.

Current prices include:
Half-day hack: £130
Full-day hack: £240
Windermere pack pony trek: £195 per person (minimum 2)
Family discount (2 adults + 2 children): £425
Windermere 1-night wild camp: £555 per person
Swindale 3-day wild camp: £745 per person
Haweswater 3-day wild camp: £775 per person

Do you offer gift vouchers?
Yes. Gift vouchers are available in values from £50 to £500 and are valid for 12 months from purchase.
Vouchers are professionally printed, with an optional boxed presentation available.
🎒 Practical Details
What should I wear?
You will need:
Sturdy footwear
Comfortable outdoor clothing
Waterproof jacket and layers suitable for all weather
This is an outdoor expedition in a mountainous environment.
What happens if the weather is bad?
All experiences are weather-dependent.
In extreme weather conditions, experiences may be adjusted or rescheduled. Pony welfare and client safety always come first.
However, we do operate in typical Lake District weather! You should wear sturdy footwear, comfortable outdoor clothing, and a waterproof jacket. Be prepared for all weather conditions as experiences are outdoors.
Can I borrow equipment?
Riding hats: Yes, available in a range of sizes
Back protectors: No, we are unable to provide these
Is there somewhere to leave my luggage?
Yes. We have secure storage for luggage and valuables.
How do I get there by public transport?
You can:
Take a train to Grange-over-Sands, then a bus to Newby Bridge (10-minute walk)
Take a train to Windermere, then a bus to Newby Bridge
Take a train to Oxenholme, then a taxi (approx. 30 minutes)
🌿 Fell Ponies & The Stud
What is a Fell pony?
The Fell Pony is a hardy native British breed from the Cumbrian Fells, known for strength, sure-footedness, and a calm temperament. Historically used as pack ponies, they are now popular for riding, driving, and conservation grazing.
Are Fell ponies suitable for beginners?
Yes. Fell ponies are known for their calm nature and reliability, making them well suited to guided experiences.
Can I bring my own pony on a wild camping trek?
No. We only use our home-bred ponies, as they are trained and accustomed to the equipment and conditions involved.
Do you have ponies for sale?
We occasionally have handled youngstock or ridden ponies for sale. Please contact us to enquire.
Can I visit your stud?
Yes, stud visits are welcome by appointment only.
